How to Lower Blood Pressure Fast

How to Lower Blood Pressure Fast

If you mean how to bring down a high blood-pressure reading quickly, the safest approach depends on how high it is.

If your BP is high right now

  1. Sit quietly for 5 minutes with your back supported, feet flat on the floor, and arm supported at heart level. Then take another reading. Avoid talking during the measurement.
  2. Do not take extra blood-pressure medicine unless your doctor has specifically instructed you to do so.
  3. Avoid caffeine, smoking, alcohol, and strenuous exercise while you’re trying to recheck the reading.
  4. If your reading remains over 180/120 mmHg, contact a healthcare professional immediately.
  5. If it is over 180/120 AND you have chest pain, shortness of breath, severe weakness/numbness, vision changes, back pain, or difficulty speaking, seek emergency medical care immediately.

For lowering blood pressure over time

  • Reduce salt/sodium, particularly processed and packaged foods.
  • Eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and other high-fiber foods.
  • Exercise regularly—CDC recommends about 150 minutes of moderate activity per week for adults.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Limit alcohol.
  • Manage stress and get adequate sleep.
  • Take prescribed BP medication consistently if your doctor has prescribed it.

There isn’t a reliable, safe home remedy that can rapidly lower dangerously high BP. Very high BP may require medical treatment rather than trying to lower it yourself.

If you tell me your current BP reading (for example, 165/95) and whether you have any symptoms, I can explain what that reading means and what to do next.
